Description

I have conquered two fears today.

The first fear is my fear of Shaped Plastic (the Lower Receiver is basically shaped plastic). I fear it because unlike boxes and blocks, it can't be easily shaped. This was my first time entirely re-topoligizing anything for a gun. Ultimately it was a waste of time 'cause I just dynameshed it again, but still. That whole paragraph makes no sense unless you know Zbrush, does it?

The second fear is my fear of UV mapping. You can't see it (other than the elegantly placed fingerprints) but this model is fully UV mapped on one (One!) map. I also put it through Substance Painter and Photoshop to help improve the maps.

This also has been the longest project I've successfully completed. So there.

As for the gun:
It's based on the StG-82F (fav.me/d9ddi8c) concepted by the awesome :iconduality-of-one: It's an assault rifle for space, so it uses 5mm Caseless Sabot ammo. One day I might add the actual ammunition to the drawing. Though the original uses a push-button and dual-stage safety, mine has a fire control switch.

Stats: (Non-Canon, as usual)
Chamber: 5mm Sabot, Caseless
Action: Gas operated short-stroke piston
Effective range: ALL OF SPACE
Muzzle velocity: 1.5 km/s
Feed: 20x box mag
Weight: 3.3KG, 4KG with optional weights for recoil damping
Length: 640 cm

Yes, I know it's missing a bunch of features like a mag release and not-obviously-post-production sight windows. I half want to go back but on second thought, no I don't.

Anyway, took me about 20 hours total. Yes. I know. 2-3 hours modelling in Cinema 4D and Zbrush, 2-3 hours on the UV mapping in Cinema 4D, the rest on playing with Quixel, Substance Painter, and Photoshop to get it to look right.

Rendered in Cinema 4D because I didn't want to set up a whole new shader in Keyshot.
